A guest reports norovirus and the house is full tonight

Reception takes the call at 9am. A guest has been unwell overnight, and it sounds like norovirus. Two rooms are involved, probably the corridor, possibly the breakfast area. Housekeeping is already stretched, every room is sold for tonight, and one review mentioning sickness follows a property for years.

In short

A machine in housekeeping lets the rooms be fogged inside the existing changeover and re-let the same afternoon, with a dated certificate to show if anyone asks — instead of blocking rooms or waiting on a contractor.

Blocking rooms is the expensive option

The default response is to block the rooms until someone can deep clean them. On a full night, blocking two rooms costs more than most properties spend on cleaning chemicals in a month — and it does not answer the corridor or the breakfast room.

The other default, a thorough wipe-down, deals with what a cloth reaches. Norovirus does not restrict itself to what a cloth reaches.

Treatment inside the changeover

Housekeeping cleans the room as normal, places the machine with a do-not-enter card showing the safe entry time, and moves to the next room. The cycle is short enough that the room comes back within the changeover rather than after it.

The disinfectant leaves no residue on soft furnishings, screens or upholstery, so there is nothing to rinse, wipe back or air out beyond the calculated re-entry period.

  • Guest rooms, corridors, lifts, spa and gym areas, breakfast rooms and back of house
  • A preventative cycle through the winter season rather than incident-only response
  • Dated certificates you can display in reception as visible reassurance
  • Around five rooms per hour with a single 8kg unit

Turning it into something guests can see

Preventative work only builds confidence if people know about it. A short notice works well: this area has today received a hospital-grade disinfection; there was no problem here, we simply want it to be extra safe.

Properties that display dated certificates find guests notice, and it answers the question before it is asked — which is a far better position than answering it in a review reply.

Frequently asked

Will it affect bedding, curtains or upholstery?
No. The hydrogen peroxide based disinfectant leaves no residue and breaks down to water and oxygen.
How soon can the room be re-let?
Re-entry time is calculated per room volume at survey and displayed on the door card. In practice rooms are treated and returned inside the normal changeover.
Is a single machine enough for a full hotel?
For most properties, yes — one unit treats up to five rooms per hour. Larger estates often lease one per property or share between nearby sites.
